~ Description ~
“Tour of Sicily” recounts a tumultuous and intense relationship between Sicily and Brian, beginning with the allure of love and growing into a dangerous entanglement tied to financial deception, emotional manipulation, and hidden criminal activity. Initially, Sicily is enamored by Brian’s charm and attention, believing their connection to be genuine. However, as time progresses, Brian’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic and distant, accompanied by financial irresponsibility and secrecy. The tension peaks when it is revealed that Brian is heavily indebted—$2.85 million—likely due to involvement in illicit endeavors. This revelation triggers violence, mistrust, and an unraveling of the relationship. Despite Sicily’s attempts to comprehend and salvage their bond, the strain of Brian’s actions and the severity of their predicament force a painful re-evaluation of the relationship’s foundation and her own safety. The story explores themes of love, trust, deception, and the dangerous consequences of hidden truths within intimate relationships.

§He was all I wanted. Tall, smooth, and handsome. He made me feel like I was all he wanted, and believing that was the first mistake§
“Excuse me, ma’am.”
“Oh! Yes, Sir. Sorry about that. My body is more aware of it being the end of my shift than I thought.”
“No need for apologies.”
“So, how can I help you today?”
“I need to make a withdrawal. I called beforehand due to the amount and was told to bring this.”
“Okay. Let me take a look.
Okay. Sir, I have a few questions here for you.”
“I have a few questions for you, too, Miss Lady.”
§And just like that, our lives had changed forever. It was as if we were joined at the hip; we did everything together. But soon, things would start to unravel and force us to re-evaluate how well we knew each other§
“Brian...
Babe?
He said he'd be here. I'm not dealing with this…
Great, and my phone is about to die. He better answer.”
“He... Hello?”
“Brian, where are you?
You were supposed to let the dogs out.
You didn't take out the trash, you…"
“Sicily!
Please. I'm making money right now, I have to call you back.”
“You say that, but the money never makes it home.”
§I could hear laughter in the background§
“Oh wow, bro, your lady wild. Hahahaha!”
“Are you stupid? Who you think you talking to? I'm a grown man.”
“Babe.”
“Babe, nothing! Do what needs to be done. I'll be there later.”
“Man, roll the dice!”
“See, you're about to mess me up, bye!”
“Brian.
Brian! I can't believe it…
he hung up!”
§Brian didn't come home until the next day. I jumped to my feet, still half asleep, and took off to meet him at the door§
“Listen, I don't know what type of girl you think I am, but the disrespect has hit a plateau. This isn't going to work. It's over.”
§Brian dropped to his knees and cried as he wrapped his arms around my legs§
“You don't get to play the victim.”
“If you don't help me, that's what we will be.”
“What? Did you just threaten me?!”
“No, Sicily! I love you.
I've been running around making as much money as possible.”
“I'm lost. I've been paying most of the bills since I've been here, Brian. It's been almost three months; you haven't been trying very hard.”
“I've been saving… I'm sorry I wasn't more upfront and honest when we met… But what exactly do you think I do for a living?”
“Don't look at me like that, I know you sell drugs or something.”
“(Scoff)… Um, not exactly.”
“I knew whatever it was, it was better not to ask…
I’m so stupid. I knew better, but I just had to bite the bait.
Sorry, Brian. I care about you, but I don't see how ‘we’ are in danger. This sounds like a ‘you’ problem. If you're in debt, I can't help you.”
“You can't help me?”
“No, I can’t!
You are a piece of work. You're all over the place. Why would you tell me I'm in danger? Such a manipulative thing to do. I really don't know you.”
“You can't just leave Sicily, please. I said I’m sorry. I feel like I’m losing my mind, and I need you!”
“I can’t. This is a lot to say that we just started dating.”
“Don't walk away from me!”
“Brian, let go!”
“Whoa, what's happening here?”
“Calvin, what I told you about knocking, man?”
“My bad, Bright. I mean, you told me and C to come through asap, so…”
§Calvin struggled to make eye contact with me as he spoke, which somewhat made me feel more embarrassed§
“Sup, Sicily?”
“Hi, Calvin. Bye, Calvin.”
“Sicily, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait… let's talk in the room, babe, please.”
“I don't mind you talking to me while I pack.”
“Oooh. Um, bro, you want us to come back?”
“Sit y'all asses down, man!”
“Okay then. My goodness.”
“Sicily, I'm not playing with you.”
“Nor am I, Brian. This is far too much. I’m not built for this type of relationship, okay.”
“I can do better. I'm just stressed…
Come here. Listen for just two minutes.”
“I don't see how you can change my mind.”
“All you have to do is work with me and the guys.”
“Excuse me.”
“Babe, just listen to the entire plan.”
“Plan? Now you have a plan.”
“Got’ damn it, Sicily!”
“You don't have to grab me!”
“I could die, and you’re playing games!”
“Die?!”
“Yes! Dead. Un-alive. No longer here.”
“What did you do? How much money do you need? Maybe you can take out a loan?”
“Sure, you think I’ll get approved for $2.85 million.”
“You are dead.”
§I’m not sure if he slapped or punched me in the face; it happened so fast. When I opened my eyes, I was on the floor. The taste of blood made me gag as it started to fill up in my mouth§
“I tried this the easy way, Sici.”
“Brian, man, you tripping!”
“She's fine! And this is my house! If you don't like it, get out!”
“That's not cool, bro.”
“But you're still here, right? Yeah, 'cause you need this just as much as me.”
“Man, at least go help her up.”
§I watched the man I thought loved me disappear as he turned away§
“Come on, Sis, I got you.”
“Don't touch me.”
“See? And you're trying to help her. Sicily, come join us. I'll explain everything.”
“Bro, maybe we should…”
“Shut up, Craig.”
“O…Kay”
“Long story short, we owe someone $2.85 mil, and you can imagine what happens if that money isn't given to said party.”
“How did you come into that kind of debt, Brian?”
“Doesn't matter now.”
“So, What? Are you going to off me if I don't help you?”
“Whoa, slow down. The goal is for everyone to be breathing at the end of this.”
“Calvin, don't address my girl. I'll answer her questions.”
“I'm not your girl anymore, Brian.”
“Ha. Awe, our first fight.”
“You're crazy!”
“Maybe, but not enough to un-alive you. I'm not a monster.”
“What then? Because “love” alone isn’t the key.”
“You're funny. It's my favorite thing about you. But no. I have nudes and videos.”
“Brian! How did you? No, WHEN did you?”
“Ah, ta, ta, ta, shh. Listen, they will remain private... Unless.”
“Unless what?”
“Shut up and let me talk!!
The bank you work at. We're going to you know… (sarcastic chuckle).”
“That's why you were banking with us? I’m. So. Stupid!!!”
“We have the perfect plan. No one will think anything of anything.”
“How many movies have you guys watched? That is an insane idea. I get that you’re desperate…”
“No, no, you don’t get it. You have no clue what we’re feeling.”
“That doesn’t give you the right to ruin my life, though!
Blackmailing me into this is sick!
Karma is going to have a field day with you!”
“I see I didn’t get my point across earlier, baby.”
§Brian stood up and began making his way toward me, but was stopped by Craig. Brian smacked his hand away and pushed him back into the spot he was sitting in. Calvin sprang up and stood in front of Brian. The energy in the room intensified for a small moment; Brian tried not to seem intimidated, but you could see his relief after Calvin started speaking calmly§
“We’re all stressed, brother. Don’t start losing your head now. Bullying everybody is not how we get this done. Okay?”
“You’re right. I’m sorry y’all. Sorry, C, you know I don’t mean anything by it. I’m just stressed, bro.”
“I get it, bro, we’re good.”
“Sorry isn’t enough for me. I don’t want any part of this. If you care about me, you will let me go.”
“We can’t do that.”
“I can’t do this. I can’t walk into my workplace and act as if everything is fine.”
“Maybe she can call in sick that day.”
“No, she can’t call in sick that day. Leave the ideas to us, man.”
“Please just let me go. You don’t need me. How do you figure you need me?! Movies?! I don’t know any special details that would guarantee that you will get away with this!”
“I disagree, babe. If we sit down and go over the details, you’ll feel much better. No interruptions, just hear us out and then let us know how it sounds. Honest opinion, preferably one not based on fear.”
§My speechlessness gave the false impression that I was ready to listen. All I could think about was Brian’s betrayal. I watched them explain their plan as if it were a game we were about to play. I was more afraid of how good their plan sounded, almost too good§
“So what do you think?”
“I think you guys have covered everything.”
§Brian studied my face and body language as if his life depended on it§
“I almost believe you.”
“Seriously. It sounds almost too good. Do any of you know someone else who works there?”
§They all looked at each other before simultaneously bursting out in laughter§
“Yes! So it’s legit, boys!”
“Wait. When are you going to do this? And I’m still not clear on what I’m supposed to do exactly.”
“That’s the best part, you just be you. Do what you would normally do if the place is being stuck up. As far as when I think it’s better if you didn’t know.”
“I agree.”
“So…do I.”
“How are you all so…nonchalant about this?”
“We’ve accepted our fates, my love.”
“Yeah. It’s better than waiting to be taken out.”
“All right, fellas, I think it’s time we head out. Bye, Sicily.”
§I put my head down as Craig and Calvin stood up to leave. I had nothing else to say to them. Calvin pulled Brian into the hallway§
“Ay, bro, keep your hands off of her, alright? We can’t have her going to work with freaking bruises or a black eye.”
“I didn’t think about that. Thanks, man. You boys be safe.”
§I became nauseous after hearing Brian re-enter the apartment. I froze in place, not sure what to do or say§
“I’m sorry you had to find out like this. I know you don’t believe me, but I do love you. A crazy part of me is hoping you look past my previous actions. I didn’t mean to hurt you in any way. I’m just at a low moment in my life right now. Once it’s all over, I’m going to take you to Bali like we talked about, or you can take your portion and do whatever you want.”
“I don’t want any of that money.”
“You say that now because you’re afraid. You’ll see. I’ll sleep in the guest room; I’m sure you want to be alone tonight.”
§I was so relieved to hear that I would have the night to myself§
“But, I need your phone, though.”
“What?”
“Your phone. And do I need to tell you what will happen if you pull anything? I mean anything. Like trying to sneak out of this house or warning someone about what you were told.”
“You don’t have to prove anything to me, I can see how vicious you are.”
§Brian looked as if I had hit him§
“Si…I’m… never mind.”
§The next few days were intense. Not knowing when they were going to run in was messing with my head. Two weeks had gone by, and nothing. Brian and I were finally speaking again, but it was still awkward. After another two weeks, Craig and Calvin started to come over again. I was in awe as they acted like the other day never happened. Before I knew it, I was playing along too§
“Hey Sicily, did you hear?”
“Hear what?”
“A new manager slot is about to open!”
“Carla, how do you find out everything before we do?”
“You know me, girl. Are you going to go for it?”
“No, I haven’t been here long enough. I’m sure they will give it to one of you first. You?”
“Girl, no, I don’t want that headache, honey.”
§I felt my chest tighten after watching Carla’s smile fade§
“All right, everybody! This is exactly what it looks like! Nobody make a damn move!!”
§I froze in place, I meant to turn around and put my hands up, but I didn’t want to look at anyone§
“You, you, and you!”
“Wh…who? Me?”
“Yes, you! Take me to the back! Now! Move!”
§Everything was happening so fast, I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing§
“Okay, you two go with them, and ma’am, you come with me! Where are the safe deposit boxes?”
“They're right back that way.”
“Here’s the key, go.”
“You have a key?”
“Move!”
§I found and opened the safe deposit box as quickly as I could. I was surprised to see the box only had a chip in it§
“Here, put it in this.”
§Brian had a small metallic case and pouch for the chip. Once I was done placing everything in its proper place, Brian snatched the pouch from me§
“Here’s the last one. A and B, tie them up.”
“Got it, C!”
“We've got about four and a half minutes left, gentlemen! Scrape up the last of it and let’s go!”
§And just like that, they were gone. I couldn’t believe they did it, a part of me was impressed with the whole ordeal§
“Hi, excuse me, ma’am, I’m Detective David H. School. I don’t want to take up too much of your time; I just have a few questions to ask you.”
§The detective didn’t give me a difficult time, but it was hard to tell what he may have been thinking. I told myself it was just nerves. I came home to an empty house, but instead of stripping down and settling in like I usually do, I just sat on the couch and stared at the ceiling. The quiet disappeared as the dogs and Brian came in§
“What’s up, babe? How was your day? (Loud laugh)!”
§Brian slid in his socks coming down the hall§
“I can’t believe it.”
“Don’t act like I never take the dogs out.”
“I’m not talking about the dogs!”
“Shhh. Dance with me.”
§I felt just as insane as him as I caught a glance of myself in the wall mirror; I couldn’t believe I had a smile on my face. I tried to push him away, but he wouldn’t let me go§
“Come on, Brian, stop playing.”
“Why can’t we enjoy this moment, hmm?”
“Because I haven’t forgotten what brought us to this moment.”
“(Sigh) Listen, all we have to do now is wait this out, and once things are clear, it's a new life. Even you have to admit this worked out perfectly.”
“I’m a little impressed.”
“Oh yeah.”
§I paused for a moment to take in the way Brian’s face lit up§
“I wasn’t expecting that. I appreciate your honesty.”
“Speaking of honesty, who were those extra guys you had with you? And you said it was about the money, but you seemed more focused on that chip.”
“Aren’t we observant… The guys are none of your concern, the less you know, remember? As far as that chip goes, well, it’s worth more than everything in that bank.”
“How’d you get that key to the safe deposit box?”
§Brian’s body started to tense up, I wasn’t too sure how he would respond§
“(Exhale) Sici, I’m not sure if you noticed how I don’t talk about my parents much.”
“How could I not notice? You’re always avoidant when it comes to talking about any family.”
“Because I don’t have any. My mom died when I was 7 and my dad…”
“What happened?”
“They say my mom killed herself, but I know she wouldn’t have left me like that. My dad was great…”
“Was he sick or…”
§Brian took a few moments. I assumed it was him asking himself, should he tell me the truth or not§
“I killed my father.”
§My body hit the couch before my mind decided sitting would be best§
“Why?”
“I meant that it's my fault he’s gone. I was working for, or still work for, the Sananda family.”
“What?! Is…is that what all of this is about? Brian, they are dangerous!”
“No shit. But it’s okay now.”
“Okay? They allegedly offed your dad. I’m supposed to believe everything will be okay?”
“I say it's all good because I have a plan.”
“What are we going to do?”
“We?”
“I mean, yeah, if they hurt your family. I’ve been scared and angry about how you went about it, babe. I wish you had been honest and given me the benefit of the doubt. I could’ve been here for you if you gave me the chance.”
§Brian fought back tears§
“(Clears throat) After everything that’s happened, you’d have my back like that?”
“You weren’t always cruel; I know the guy I met is still in there. Now that you’re letting me in, things are adding up. That was my biggest issue; I was confused and not sure who or what you were becoming.”
§Brian grabbed me and hugged me tight§
“I don’t have anybody else, Sicily. I truly am sorry for how I’ve been acting.”
“I know. If you can promise to be open and honest from now on, then maybe we can fix this.”
§Brian’s kiss was unexpected. He kissed me more passionately than he ever had before§
“I love you, girl. I don’t deserve you, but you deserve more. Let’s start with that chip. So, I was on a job they sent me on. It was nothing out of the ordinary, you know. I went to collect from some guy that owed money. He didn’t have it, and I was told he didn’t have anymore, what we say ‘links in his chain,’ so I was supposed to take him out.”
“Supposed to…”
“Yeah, I pulled my blade out, and of course, he started saying whatever he thought would save his life. Then he mentioned Craig.”
“Oh wow! What did he say?!”
“I thought he was desperate, but turns out he was Craig’s uncle; he married Craig’s aunt a couple of years ago. I didn’t know what to do, so I called and had Craig come over.”
“Wait, but wasn’t that risky though, why would you call him?”
“Craig works for them, too.”
“Oh, and Calvin?”
“Calvin, no. I met him through Craig a while back. He goes on runs with us here and there, but that’s about it.”
“I’m not sure how gangs, mobs, or whatever category you guys fall under work, but it sounds like you were making a few mistakes there, baby.”
“Tell me about it. I’m not sure what I was thinking; I became too comfortable, I guess.”
“So what happened once Craig got there?”
“He verified it was his uncle. So now I’m conflicted, right… I pull C to the side, and he tells me that his uncle has valuable information that could put us in a position to take over.”
“Take over the Sananda family?!”
“In a sense, yes.”
“Why, though?”
§Brian stared at the ceiling for a few seconds§
“You know what? I’m not even sure. It sounded good. I know I wanted more out of life, so I wanted to see what his uncle had to say. He not only broke it down for me, but he showed me. That chip has everything about everything on it, Sicily.”
“What’s everything? Come on, spill the tea!”
“Babe. Everything. Every access code, password, and secret. Access to everyone's clean and dirty laundry. The secrets to how the world works. I mean everything in the sense of the word.”
“And we have it HERE!!!”
“Shhh, relax. We’re the safest people on the planet. No one would risk us getting rid of or damaging that thing. It's a delicate situation.”
“Okay, so you got the chip from his uncle, then what?”
“I didn’t say that’s where I got it from.”
“You said he showed you.”
“Yeah, he showed me some information that he couldn’t have had unless he was telling the truth. He didn’t have the chip or direct access to it; he only assisted with its creation. He worked for them all his life, if I’m not mistaken. He was a genuinely cool guy. I let him live, and he helped me and Craig get the chip.”
“You guys were living in a whole movie.”
“Ha, I know, right. It was a little intoxicating, I can’t lie.”
“But how in the world did you guys get your hands on something so valuable? You would think that kind of thing would be guarded 24/7.”
§Brian shook his head as he lit a cigarette§
“I guess they figured it would be less obvious having no guards. In my opinion, it worked because none of us knew this thing existed, and once we did, we had no clue where to find it. But having someone close made everything go smoother; Craig is dating Mr. Sananda’s daughter.”
“Whoa! Craig?! Craig, Craig?”
“Hahahahaha! Yes! She loves him. He started dating her a while back so that they could get close and figure out where the chip was. It was always their plan; I got lucky and was let in on it because I spared his uncle's life.”
“I wouldn’t call that luck… All of this is wild, you should write a book.”
“(Chuckle) Hey, that’s just the beginning!”
“Okay, but how did he get it? Did he trick her? Or is she on his side?”
“No, nothing like that. She doesn’t know. He just asked the right questions, paid attention, and reported back to his uncle, and he helped him pinpoint where it might be. Come to find out, it was in the mouth of some statue.”
“How did it end up in the safe deposit box?”
“The plan was for Craig’s uncle to disappear with the chip. We had a crew of guys we put together, and we were going to use the chip to take over. Simple right? Well, Craig’s uncle gets spotted while trying to get a passport made, something he was supposed to already have. He panics and hides the chip. He sends some cryptic message to Craig so we would know where to find it, but that was it. Last we heard from him.”
“Oh noooo, poor Craig! But you never know, he could still be…”
§Brian stops me§
“No, they made sure we knew he was gone.”
§His face told me everything I needed to know without asking§
“Then what?”
“Craig was terrified, didn’t know what to do, and wanted to give the chip back. At this point, not only had I stolen from them, but now they knew I had lied about taking care of his uncle in the first place, meaning they knew I had something to do with it. We had no choice but to carry out our plan.
Then things started getting strange; my dad was getting weird calls, and people were coming to his company, so I came out of hiding to check on him. I tried to keep him out of it, but it was impossible, so I told him everything. He made me give him the chip, and he put it in his safe deposit box.”
“Ohhh! Okay!”
“Yeah, so fast forward a little bit. I was running again, and this is when I met Calvin. He called me one day, saying Craig was a mess and that he was asking for me. I got back here, and he was unrecognizable. They found out it was his uncle and pieced him into the equation. I knew he would probably do something stupid or hurt himself. Half the crew we put together were either taken out, disappeared, or they were playing it cool as if they weren’t down with the cause, so any thoughts of putting up a fight were out.”
“So what then?”
“I did what any man would do; I acted like I had an army behind me and told them we could negotiate, presented it well enough to buy myself some time. I was trying to find anyone willing to go up against them, and then I got a call.”
“Your dad?”
“Some guy was jogging and saw the back end of his car sticking out of the river.”
§I sat in Brian’s lap and hugged him as lovingly as I could. He tried to hide his tears but couldn’t. After crying for a few minutes, Brian kisses me on the cheek§
“Thanks, baby, I’m okay.”
“How can you be okay with all of this going on?”
“No choice. I did this to myself anyway, so…”
§Brian cleans his face off with his shirt before lighting another cigarette§
“I knew then that they had run out of patience and also were testing to see if I had backup.”
“They called your bluff.”
“Absolutely. So I folded, I went to go get the chip, but ran into some issues.”
“Your dad died, so you couldn’t get in the safe deposit box!”
“Bingo! So I had to steal the chip back.”
“Wait. Now I’m confused again. You said everything was going to be okay. This doesn’t sound like it's going to end with us in Bali together.”
“I asked for a head start.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I’ve been talking to Mr. Sananda’s dog, aka sidekick, aka right hand, and they seem happy to accept $2.85 mil in exchange for letting you guys go, the crew can keep the rest of the take. You guys are free, especially you, they know you have nothing to do with anything, they’re not thinking about you, honestly.”
“Where did the $2.85 million debt come from?”
“My big mouth. I told them that’s what I told you to get you to help, so that’s the price they put on you guys being able to skate.”
“So, for clarity… You’re saying I’m free to leave at any time?”
“Yes.”
“How are you so sure?”
“They said it’s me and C who they have the problem with.”
“What are you two going to do now?”
“We set up for me to send them a location to get the chip in a few days. If it goes as planned, they will be on one side of town picking it up while I’m on the other side of town escaping.”
“Hmm, not sure I can just leave you like this.”
“What?!”
§Brian grabbed my face§
“Say that one more time, please.”
“I said I don’t think I can leave you. With all of that, I wouldn’t have been much of myself either. And if I’m not in danger, then why not stay?”
“I would prefer you did.”
§Brian smiled big, and his eye contact was intense. I could tell my staying was the last thing he expected to hear§
“What are our next steps?”
“Your next step is out of here.”
“But you just said that you want me to stay.”
“Yeah, it's what I want, but not what I need. Being away from me is best until it blows over. Or more so, if it blows over. Can’t have you here every day sitting and waiting to see if I come back.”
“If I leave here, I’ll still be waiting for you.”
§Brian ran his fingers across my lips§
“Come on.”
§I allowed him to lead me to our bedroom…
I woke up the next day in a panic. The bed was made up on Brian’s side, and the dogs were still in their cages. I rushed to the restroom to clean myself up before running to find something simple to throw on§
“Hey, where you rushing off to?”
“You jerk!”
§I started hitting Brian anywhere my hand could land§
“Okay, okay, enough!
What have or haven’t I done?
Oh! I forgot to take the dogs out!”
“It's not about the freaking dogs!
I thought you were gone!”
“Aww baby, I’m sorry, come here, come here.”
§Brian giggled as he pulled me into a tight hug§
“It’s not funny, you know it’s not.”
“It is because I’m not gone.”
“Where did you go?”
“I went to go talk to Pete, Mr. Sananda’s dog.”
“What did he say?”
“He fed me some crap about how they liked the work we put in.”
“That’s a good thing.”
“Maybe.
Sici, you gotta remember we still have what they want, people are nice when they want something.
I still think you should leave and go somewhere. I’ll just meet up with you when it’s safe.”
“I don’t want to, please don’t make me leave.”
“Things are calm, but they always are before the…before the?”
“Storm. Yeah, yeah.”
“I’m serious. Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I would much rather you hated me right now.”
§I wrapped my arms around Brian’s neck§
“Too bad because I don’t!
Hungry?”
§Brian threw his head back in frustration. Before either one of us could say anything further, there was a knock at the door§
“You expecting someone?”
“No, you?”
“No.”
§Brian went to answer the door while I grabbed some pants§
“Hi, I'm Detective David H. School. Is there a Sicily Carlisle here?”
“Yes, sir, one moment.”
“Sicily, there’s a fucking detective here to talk to you.”
“Oh shoot, babe, what do I do?”
“Just keep it cool, you got this.”
“Mr. School, Hi, nice to see you again.”
"Likewise, Ms. Carlisle. I’m sorry to bother you, but I have a few more questions about the other day.”
“Sure, come in and make yourself comfortable. This is my boyfriend Brian Amaryllis.”
“Amaryllis?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Wouldn’t happen to be related to Bing Amaryllis, would you?”
“Yes, sir, he was my father.”
“Interesting.”
“How so, sir? Did you know my father?”
“I did. I’m sorry for your loss. But that’s part of the reason I’m here.”
“I don’t follow. I thought you came here to speak with my girl.”
“See, I came to ask about a safe deposit box, Ms. Carlisle.
When one of the robbers took you to the back, they only had you open the one safe deposit box. Did they say anything to you?”
“Um…no.”
“Take your time and try to remember.”
“Um, no, they didn’t say anything, just to open the box, that’s it.”
“You sure?”
“She just told you, twice.”
“My apologies. I don’t mean to come off pushy. It's just that the safe deposit box belonged to your father, Mr. Amaryllis.”
§Brian and I stood like two dumb deer caught in headlights§
“Huh?”
“Did you have a close relationship with your father?”
“I did.”
“Did he hang around questionable people or…”
“My father was a businessman; he hung around a lot of people. He even knew you, right?”
“I mean no disrespect. I know this is difficult. I’m sure you want these guys found just as much as me.”
“Absolutely.”
“Do you have any idea of whether or not your father had any issues with anyone?”
“Not that I knew of, everyone loved him from my point of view.”
§Brian started to get choked up§
“Again, my apologies, I wasn’t planning on speaking with you just yet, so I’m just as caught off guard here as you. But I have to do my job.”
“I understand. It's like you said, I’m just caught off guard, is all.”
“More than understandable. Here’s my card if you think of anything else or need anything.”
“Thank you, sir.”
“Sorry again, I’ll get out of your hair for now.”
§We both exhaled deeply§
“What the hell! You thought of everything but that!”
“Nooooo! Craig was supposed to take the drill to multiple boxes while you all were being tied up!
I’m going to whoop his ass, man!”
“Quiet. He might still be in the hall.”
“As soon as I see him, it's going to be a problem.”
“There’s already a problem; he just tied you to this! To the bank! The bank I work at! He’ll probably put it all together in the car, Brian! We are screwed.”
“Maybe not.”
“$2.85 mil for your thoughts.”
“Funny. But I’m serious, this isn’t just optimism. It still proves nothing. If anything, it looks like some people went after my dad and had problems with him. We didn’t have any issues, and no one can say otherwise.”
“What if they think you killed him and did the robbery?”
“Why would I hurt my father?”
“Kids do it all the time. They will just think it's because of money.”
“I have money. I mean, I’m not rich, but I’m comfortable. So they got nothing.”
“I still can’t believe you pretended to be broke and had me paying all the bills.”
“Wait one minute now. I remember being stressed and missing one wifi bill by accident, not a lack of funds. You volunteered to pay it, then took over all the bills.
You allowed me to make that part of my act, hell, you almost forced it.
What were you thinking, by the way? You saw my bank account, what made you think I pissed away all that money?”
“So you’re blaming me? Somewhere in there, I think I heard dumb dumb, too.”
“No, just showing you the part you played.”
“Okay, you might have a point. Not just about the part I played, but the part about us being fine. No reason this should look bad…..…
I’m lying. I don’t know what to do!”
§Brian started to shake me§
“Hey, hey, hey! You’re fine. We’re fine. Nothing's changed. We still got this.”
§I wanted to believe him. The rest of the day felt surreal. Some parts of the day felt normal, and other parts of the day felt like a dream. Nothing worse than feeling fine, and then getting a huge wave of concern that crashes on top of you. The day after was no better; we didn’t talk about it, but every time we looked at each other, it felt as if we were telepathically panicking together. And before we knew it, it was time to drop the chip off. Brian was more than ready to get it over with§
“What time is it?”
“He’s late if that’s what you’re asking.”
“Where is C at?”
“Don’t panic, Bright, man, you know he’ll be here.”
§Craig ran into the apartment, slamming the door behind him§
“Who’s chasing you, brother?”
“Damn the jokes, homie. There is no deal.”
“What you mean?!”
“Look at me! Some guys chased me damn near all the way here.”
“That doesn’t make sense. Why would they try to attack you before the drop?”
“I don’t know, Bri, why don’t you run downstairs and ask them?”
“Okay, everybody chill, let me think.”
“I think it’s Millie, man, I think she wants me dead.”
“Your girlfriend?”
“Babe, you forgot?”
“Oh yeah, she’s the boss's daughter.”
“Brian, you have to go without me.”
“I’m not going up there without you. This is our mess.”
“I’ll go with you, bro.”
“Cal, I can’t ask you to do that.”
“You’re not asking.”
§Brian pulled me close, and without saying anything, he kissed me deeply. Calvin clapped his hands together, the loud sound echoed as it bounced between the walls and our ears§
“We've got to go!”
“I love you. Wait for about 20 minutes after I leave, then I want you to take the bags I packed with you, nothing else. Go over and stay with Carla until I contact you later.
If by any chance I don’t call you by midnight, leave and don’t look back. I’m serious, Sicily, don’t wait for me or listen to anyone else; not Calvin, not Craig, I mean no one!”
“Okay, okay, I understand. But, I know you’ll be back, though. Be careful.”
§Brian grabbed Craig by his collar, and just like that, they were gone§
“C, I don’t see anybody.”
“Look at me, man. Look at the sweat on my damn forehead, does it look like I mistakenly got chased? I’m telling you they were trying to kill me or at least catch me and take me somewhere else to kill me.”
“It doesn’t make sense, brother.”
§Craig walked in a few circles as he straightened out his shirt§
“Ah man, I know that look, C, what did you do?!”
“I’m sorry!”
“You sorry?! For what?!”
§Brian grabbed Craig by his neck and slammed him up against the wall§
“I told her, man! She’s so good to me, and she was so confused, Bright. I thought, you know, she would be happy with the truth and…”
§Brian slaps Craig hard. Calvin winces§
“Okay, man, that’s enough, Bright, nothing we can do now but put our heads together.”
“Cal, you don’t get it. We had a plan! And this fool keeps getting in the way! You couldn’t have waited one fucking day? Huh? ONE!”
“And what if I didn’t come back, bro?”
“I talked to Pete, stupid! That girl's love for you was our ticket out of here!”
“Wha?”
“Her dad cares more about her happiness than anything! He was getting his chip back! Everything was handled, you dumb shit!”
§Brain slams Craig up against the wall again§
“Why didn’t you tell me that?!”
“What the hell does it matter, C!”
“OKAY!!! We don’t have time for this!”
“Cal, I appreciate you and all that, but this ain't even your problem.”
“Just let him go, and we can take a second to come up with something, is all I’m saying. This is almost over. I want to see all of us on a beach together, Bright.”
“What did she say after you told her everything, C?”
“That I was a dead man.”
“She was right. I’m tired of you, man.”
“What? We’ve been friends for…whoa, Bright, what you doing, man?”
§Brian pulls his blade out and puts it up against Craig’s neck§
“I can’t keep cleaning up after you! You’ve always made shit more complicated than they have to be! If you weren’t in my life, there’s no telling where I’d be right now! I’m sure it would be somewhere peaceful with my ol’ lady, though!”
“Bright! I can’t let you hurt C, man.”
“It’s funny how you think you can or can not allow me to do something. And like I said, this has nothing to do with you!”
§Brian presses his blade against Craig’s throat§
“I loved you like a brother, yo. This is your fault, I gotta do this! I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry too.”
“What?!"
§Before Brian can ask Calvin why he’s sorry, he knocks him out§
“Hey girl, would you like some more peach tea?”
“Yes, please, it's so good. Thank you, Carla.”
“You think you’ll be returning to work anytime soon?”
“I’m not ready yet.”
“Yeah, me neither. It was so surreal. I wouldn’t think anything like that would happen to me.”
“You mean us?”
“Ha, right, sorry. Oh yeah, your dogs are house-trained, right?”
“Yeah, of course.”
“I’m not complaining, and I love dogs, but why’d you bring them? You never have before. Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, I’m good. You seem a little on edge. Are you okay?”
“After what happened, I’m not sure.”
“That’s understandable. What happened can traumatize people.”
“You mean us, hahaha.”
“Right. Haha.”
“So, how well trained are your babies?”
“They won’t use the bathroom in here, relax, they are fully potty trained. I already let them go before we came in, and they will let me know if they have to go again.”
“No, no, no, I meant like as far as tricks and stuff.”
“Oh! Uh…yeah, they know a few tricks, I guess.”
“I heard their breed is very protective.”
“I guess. I’ve never been in a situation to find out. Thinking about getting some?”
“Could we put them up? I mean, if that’s okay with you?”
“Carla, are you okay? Are they making you uncomfortable?”
“A little. They’re big. I’m sorry. I’m being weird. My nerves are all jacked up, you know.”
“You look like you’re about to, I don’t know, pass out or something. I’ll go put them up in your office.”
“Thanks, I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s fine. It’s your house.”
§I put the dogs up and came back to Carla, sweating badly§
“Carla! What’s wrong?”
“It’s just the other day just keeps playing in my head over and over and over…”
“I’m sorry, Carla.”
“Why should you be sorry? Not like it was your fault.”
“I know, but still. Have you talked to someone about it?”
“Have you?”
“Uh…no…”
“I figured that, why would you when you can talk to Bright, right? Ha.”
“Having a partner makes it easier, but if I really needed help, I would go talk to someone.”
“How are you taking this so well?”
“Carla, who said I was?
And wait a minute!
When did you start calling Brian Bright?!”
“You’ve called him that around me.”
“Never. I never call him by his nickname! What the hell is going on?”
§I started to feel sleepy. The angrier I got, the sleepier I became§
“Calm down, the stuff I put in your tea will kick in faster if you don’t, and I still have a few things to say before it does.”
“You sneaky little, bi…tch.”
“Oh, come now! If that isn’t the kettle calling the pot black!
You dare judge me after what you did!”
“I… knew it.”
“Knew what, darling?”
“I… knew they had to know someone… else that work…ed there.”
“What else do you know?”
§My body started to relax, and I felt my feet sliding. I knew I didn’t have long before it was lights out§
“Why don’t you tell me, Carla.”
“You are nothing; you mean nothing! Everyone loved you at work; I wonder how they would feel knowing how you betrayed them. Or better yet, how does it feel knowing that you ruined my life, huh?!”
“Yeah? And how’s…. that?”
§Carla slapped me across the face§
“Don’t you dare talk to me like that! Everything was perfect. Brian and I have known each other all our lives.”
“What?!”
§Carla slapped me again§
“Do not interrupt me! Bright told me you were good for that!
Where was I? Oh yes, so I never knew who my father was, blah, blah, blah.
Fast forward, it was just me and my mom. She met Bright’s mom one day, and they were inseparable after. Partners in crime, like literally…
One day, they meet his dad, and they both end up in a relationship with him… Until Bright’s mom gets pregnant with him. All of a sudden, he wanted a traditional family life, so my mom and I had to go. He paid for a place for us, which is better than what most would do, but my mom just couldn’t get over him. She begged and pleaded, but he wouldn’t change his mind. My mom couldn’t handle it, she got back on drugs, and life became very turbulent. She wouldn’t stop popping up at their house, so they moved… She really hit rock bottom after that and did everything and anything to find them. Finally, she did. They had a little store now and were all cleaned up. I wish I were as young as Bright; it’s easier to forget the horrible things you see, you know.”
§My head rolled downward on its own, I fought to stay conscious, but didn’t have to fight hard after being slapped again§
“Am I boring you, princess?!”
“Nah, I’m just a little drugged! You psycho bitch!”
“Now, where was I?… Oh yes, so she finds them…
They acted so differently and didn’t want anyone to know they ever knew us. Bright’s mom agreed to come to our apartment and ‘talk it out.’ My mom fixed her some tea. (Giggle)”
“Don’t tell me, the same thing you fixed me.”
“I learned from the best. After giving her the tea, she stuck her in her favorite vein.”
“So that’s where you learned to be a sneaky, murderous whore?”
§Carla kicked me out of the chair I was sitting in. I was shocked that I didn’t pass out after my head bounced off the floor. I could hear my dogs going crazy§
“My mother was no whore!!! She wasn’t a murderer either!! She loved her, loved her more than she did Bing! She wanted her back, not him!
She only wanted to show her how they used to be, you know. She wasn’t supposed to die! It was an accident. We loved her. Helping my mother make that look like a suicide crushed us, hell, it killed her! She overdosed not long after. Leaving me here with all the baggage!”
“So you want sympathy?”
“NO! I want the life we were supposed to have! I was a kid! He gave us more than he took it away! I didn’t deserve that, and neither did she!”
“You seem to be doing pretty good, so what the fuck, Carla!”
“(Scoff) Did you not hear anything I said? Well, hear this! Your boy came looking for answers once he was old enough, and he found me. I knew when I saw him that it was God’s way of renewing my life. I gave him answers, and for a time, he gave me his heart. We were perfect, then one day, he came to me and called me ‘Sis’. I was shocked, heartbroken, and downright pissed off.
He says to me, Sis, the plans have changed. We’re going to bring in your co-worker. (Hysterical laugh) I…I couldn’t believe my ears. The apple doesn't fall far from the damn TREE!!! But he was always so big on sticking to the plan!”
“(Sarcastic laugh), so I replaced…you?”
§Carla was stronger than she looked. She lifted my limp body off the floor and held me so I could look her directly in the eyes. They were black and terrifying§
“You are NOTHINGGGG!!!! You could never replace me, and I’m going to show him that!”
§I felt her hand release me, and it felt as though I were falling in slow motion. A part of me was grateful for passing out before I hit the floor§
“My head is killing me… Cal…Calvin!”
“What?!”
“What the fuck is wrong with you?! And where are we?! Where’s C at?”
“Which one of those do you want me to answer first?”
“Stop playing, man, this isn’t funny, bro.”
“I’m not your brother, and I’m not your friend guy.”
“What?”
“You were about to kill your friend.”
§Brian shook his head§
“Oh, I see, I get it, that’s your homie.”
“No, not at all, actually.”
“Excuse me?”
§Brian could hear mumbling in an office in the warehouse§
“Whose that?”
“Patience, my guy patience. We have some other guests joining us shortly.”
“Man, what is this? Is this about the chip? You have money and diamonds, why are we doing all this? I don’t care about any of it! If you’re going to kill me, kill me; if not, let me go and we can forget about each other. I don’t feel like all this bullshit.”
“You’re not in control, partna’, and that’s your problem.”
“And who is you?”
§Calvin laughs§
“I’ve honestly enjoyed you, I can’t lie. You’re not that bad.”
§Craig is wheeled into the room and parked next to Brian§
“C, you okay?!”
§Craig tried to stop crying long enough to speak clearly§
“Look at me! They got me locked in like I’m Hannibal Lecter or something, man!
My best friend tried to off me! HELL NO! No, I’m not okay!
Why would you ask me that?! Why do people do that?! That’s the dumbest question, bro! I know I’m an idiot, but I’m smart enough to know that neither one of us is okay.”
“What the hell is going on, Cal?
This dude done switched up on us! I knew you acted too loyal!
See what you brought into the circle, C! This is what I was talking about! If it weren’t for you…”
“Me?! If I’m dumb, that makes you dumber for letting me stick around this long, then!!”
“Both of you shut the fuck up!! I’ve had enough of that shit! I can’t stand either one of you, honestly! Never have! Damn! Shut up! (Exhale)…”
§Calvin yells in another language to someone in the back§
“Oh, Wowww! He was undercover, undercover, Bright!”
“Thank God, hey boys, all your questions will be answered in just a moment, Boss Lady is almost here.”
“It’s Millie, she’s going to chop my cuties off, I know it!”
“Cuties?”
“Yeah, like the little oranges.”
§Brian laughs but cuts it off quickly§
“All you had to do was keep your mouth closed.”
§Calvin starts laughing again§
“What’s so funny?”
“You still don’t get it, Bright, maybe your nickname should’ve been Dim.”
§Craig laughs as Brian shoots him a dirty look§
“Are you kidding me right now?”
“What? That was a good one.”
“Awe, there she is!”
“Carla?!”
“Hi there!
Calvin, you’ve built a relationship with their dogs, right?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Can you go help Itchy get them out of the van? They’ve been little hell hounds.”
“Didn’t you give them something?”
“Yeah, but it's barely working, not sure why.”
“Say no more, I’ll be back.”
“Carla, what are you doing?”
“Well, sweetheart, I hate to break it to you, but some things just aren’t what they seem, ay?”
“And what in the blue fuck is that supposed to mean?!”
§Carla grabs Brian by the face§
“It means payback is a bitch who gets even!”
“Um…’xcuse me, miss, but that’s ‘payback’, so you don’t have to say the get even part, it's kinda already suggested.”
“Look who wants to try and use their last few brain cells before they go.”
§Craig starts to cry again§
“Hey, hey, don’t cry…Look, I have a surprise for youuuuu.”
§The guys could see a shadow walking towards them, before long, they see who it is§
“Millie. I’m sorry, baby!”
“Save it. Your words mean nothing to me.”
§Calvin walks back in§
“Nothing like a woman scorned, ay?”
“Ma’am, where do you want us to put Sicily?”
“Wheel her next to her boo.”
§Itchy wheels Sicily in and places her next to Brian§
“Baby! Baby, please wake up!”
“BaBy pLeAsE wAkE uPPP…You disgust me!”
“Carla, what is your problem? I thought we were better than that!”
“So did I, Bright! I gave you that nickname because I thought you were smarter than this!”
“How much they offer you huh?”
“You think this is about money? I’m not your mother!”
“Excuse the hell outta me! The fuck you just say?!!”
“I’m going to do to your little Sicily what my mom did to yours.
And I’m feeling cute today; maybe I’ll let you live with it for a little while, or maybe I won’t, we’ll see.
Where’s the chip?”
“Go fuck yourself!”
§Carla laughs and than runs over and punches Sicily in the chest§
“What are you doing?!?! STOP!!! Okay!! It's in my sock!!! It’s in my sock!!!”
“Really! Like, Seriously!”
“It’s in my sock! Stupid b…”
“Aht, aht, watch your mouth! Do I need to remind you of who's in charge here, sir?”
§Carla gestured for Brian to answer the question§
“No.”
“Good. Calvin, check the socks.”
§Calvin finds the case with the chip securely inside§
“I think this belongs to you, Millie.”
“Thank you! You boys and… girl have a nice day.”
“Wait! That’s, that’s it?!”
“Yeah, it belongs to her and her family. I told you it was never about money, sweetheart. It’s always been about you!”
§Carla continues on a rant where she explains her feelings to Brian. His disgust drives her to admit what really happened to his mother§
“I hope ghosts are a real thing so me and my boy can come back and haunt the shit outta you!”
“Craig, please. No one’s worried about you, dead or alive.
Any last words my love, Bright?”
“Nope. Do what you do.”
“What, no threats, no calling me out of my name?”
“Carla, I don’t care enough about you to do all that.”
§At this point, Brian knew exactly how to get under her skin§
“What did you just say to me?!”
§Carla started to tear up§
“You cold monster! I hate you!! You said you loved me!!”
“Carla! You act like we slept together or something! I’ve been calling you my sister for God’s sake! I’ve never had feelings like that for you! You’re delusional! You need help!!”
“Why does everyone keep saying that!!!!!!! Nothing's wrong with me!! It’s all of you!! You will love me the way I want you to!! As soon as I get rid of her!”
“Carla, sorry to interrupt, but I forgot something.”
“Millie? Sure, what is it?”
“Well, first, my name isn’t Millie. It’s Malta.”
“….um…Okay.”
“Yeah, see my parents traveled a lot and they met in Malta…”
“Is this going somewhere? A little busy being a villain here, (Chuckle).”
“(Small laugh) It is, I promise.”
“(Deep exhale) Okay… continue.”
“So they loved it so much they stayed there for a little while, in fact, all of my siblings and I have names from around that area.”
§Everyone gets quiet, waiting for Malta to continue, but she takes a long pause. All of a sudden, Craig screams§
“OOOOH! I get it! You have a brother named Rome!! I met him!”
“No, I mean yes, I do, but he died when we were young, so no, you haven’t met him, but you’ve met my sister.”
§Shivers go up Brian's spine as he looks over at Sicily, who is staring back at him, smiling§
“Took you long enough, you couldn’t have done all that before the crazy bitch punched me in the chest.
Mannnnn.”
§Carla tries to run but is caught by Calvin§
“Let me guess, you’re Syracuse?”
“Funny, but no. No relation.”
“Well, I guess I should do the honors of filling in the gaps (Laugh). But first…”
§I scream in Italian for Itchy to let my dogs out§
“Even Craig can figure out my motive.
You stole from my family… To think my dad trusted you idiots at one point; then again, I kinda get why after spending some time with you.”
“Babe?”
“Aht, aht, don’t interrupt meeee. (Sigh) I mean, we had fun, right?”
§Calvin interrupts Sicily§
“Yeah, too much fun!”
“Baby, we talked about this! Why would you be jealous?”
§Brian almost passed out after hearing Sicily’s words§
“We never agreed on you playing the part entirely! How am I supposed to get over you sleeping with…that?!”
“We never had sex! We slept together, literally that’s all that took place, sleep!”
“He made it seem like something sexual was going on!
I should chop your fingers off!”
“Whoa, man! At the time, I thought you were my boy! I couldn’t have y’all knowing I hadn’t hit yet.”
“And this is why I have no sympathy for you.”
“I really loved you, girl!”
“You can’t be serious…
You were abusive, a liar, and manipulative…
Should I go on? Oh yeah, and where’d you get those pictures and video you said you had of me?!”
“I…”
“Spit it out or I’ll have Jahkai beat it out of you!”
“Who the hell is Jahkai?!”
“You know him as, Calvin.”
§Craig starts crying again§
“Can we get rid of him already?”
“Relax, C. What is your problem?”
“I don’t know who anybody is anymore.”
“Oh, please! Man, you are not a victim! You used my sister!”
“Were you pretending to love me, too, Millie Vanilli?!”
“No, I did love you. You started this. I just don’t understand why?”
§Craig used his shoulders to wipe his face§
“I’m sorry. I loved you too. I still do. I never had skills, you all see how dumb I am.
I can’t keep a job; I didn’t finish school… I was desperate, and my uncle knew that. It was a way out. I’m sorry, Mil..Malta.”
“I get it.”
§Malta went up to hug Craig. He suddenly starts gasping for air§
“C!”
§Before Craig can turn his head to answer, he lets out one huge gasp of air, before his head drops. Carla starts to scream§
“Itchy, can you free one of Brian’s hands and pass him his blade?…
Jahkai.”
§Jahkai slides Carla over to Brian with her kicking and screaming§
“Before you go, tell Brian how you were the one who killed his father.”
“It was his fault! I was just a kid! Please! I need help! That’s what it is! Please, Brian!”
§Brian hesitated for a few moments§
“I didn’t hear you deny it, Carla.”
“He deserved it, I’m sorry.”
“At least you’ll have peace now, Sis!”
§Carla stopped crying, and her eyes once again filled with rage. Brian slid his blade across her neck slowly. Jahkai let her body drop to the floor§
“Will it hurt?”
“How are we supposed to know Bri? We’ve never died before…well, not that any of us remember.”
“The pictures?”
“I deleted them.”
“I know, we have your devices. That’s not what I asked you.”
“I had hidden cameras in the bathroom.”
“You slimy little…”
“I wasn’t getting any, I wanted something to work with while I serviced myself. That doesn’t make me a creep!”
“You’re not this good guy that you’ve convinced yourself into thinking you are.”
“I know. And that’s why I want you to do it.”
“Why? Are you trying to test to see how I feel about you?”
“I know you love me. You can’t fake what we had.”
“You’re wasting your last words on me?”
“I do have one last question.”
“And what’s that?”
“Why do you guys call him itchy?”
§We all looked around at each other as we laughed in disbelief§
“We call him that because he has eczema.”
§Brian starts laughing. He closes his eyes for a few seconds. I signaled to Jahkai, who took out his silencer. Brian’s body jerked slightly as the bullets entered his body§
“I… I wanted her to do… it.”
“Like I said before, you're not running anything.”
